SEN
Here in St. Bernard’s, our Special Educational Needs (SEN) Provision is designed to support pupils with additional needs so they can access the curriculum and thrive within the school environment. Our aim is to provide inclusive, flexible, and responsive support to ensure every child with SEN can achieve their full potential.
SEN Provision offered is as follows:
1. IDENTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT
· Early Identification: We use regular assessments, observations, and feedback from teachers and parents to identify SEN.
· Specialist Assessments: We may need to involve external professionals such as our Educational Psychologist to assess needs.
· Individual Education Plans (IEPs) / Individual Booster Plans (IBPs) / Pupil Learning Profiles (PLPs): These are developed in close consultation with the teachers, parents and pupils who need tailored support, outlining specific goals and strategies.
2. DIFFERENTIATED TEACHING
· Adapting Lessons: Teachers modify content, teaching methods, and assessment techniques to meet diverse needs.
· Use of technology: Tools such e-reader pens may be supplied.
3. TARGETED SUPPORT
· In-Class Support: Our Classroom Assistants may work with pupils directly, providing one-to-ne or small group assistance.
· Intervention Programs: We offer Literacy and Numeracy Support Programs, social skills groups and behaviour management strategies.
4. SPECIALIST SERVICES
· External Support: Our school works in close collaboration with specialist services such as RISE NI and Primary Behaviour Support Services.
· Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO): Mrs Craig is our SENCO and oversees all SEN provision ensuring students receive appropriate support and that staff are trained to meet the needs of their pupils.
5. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTIONS
· Accessibility Adjustments: We have ramps, lifts, sensory rooms, sensory corridors and quiet spaces throughout the school to ensure it is accessible and inclusive for all attending.
6. EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL SUPPORT
· Pastoral Care: Our school can provide mentoring, counselling or peer support programs to enhance and support our pupils’ emotional well-being.
· Social Interaction Support: We provide activities or structured programs, such as Nurture support, to help our pupils develop friendships and social skills.
7. MONITORING AND REVIEW
· Regular Reviews: Progress against IEP/PLP targets are reviewed twice a year in collaboration with parents, pupils and professionals.
· Adjustments: The IEP/PLP is revised based on the pupil’s evolving needs and progress.
